‘Stealing’ Your Search?
A few people have told me, and I’ve experienced myself, a few instances where they searched for a domain name that they didn’t buy right away, and then within 24 hours or so the name ‘mysteriously’ was registered to someone else - usually an unnamed party.
I’ve always suspected, but never really knew if it was true that the domain registrars keep a record of what domains you search for, and if you don’t buy them right away - woe be unto you for not having your credit card handy! My suspicions were confirmed after I read Jay’s blog over at DomainTools (click here to read it), in which he describes how he did a search over at Network Solutions and they grabbed the name and raised the price!
To this I say, BE CAREFUL when you’re out there searching for domain names. Some of the domain service providers out there have shady internal practices that we might not be aware of, so its important to get on, do what you’re there for, and get off the site!
Here are some pointers:
- Don’t search for a domain name unless you are ready to buy it immediately. Always check your credit card or payment account to make sure you won’t be declined.
- Consider using a less popular domain search tool if you’re just browsing for names. One of my personal favorites is NameBoy. (www.nameboy.com)
- Remember, when you’re looking for a domain name, the future of the business you intend to build on it is at stake. Leave nothing to chance and always protect your ideas!
